We all have a stake in helping Maine kids and families stay healthy
Children are better students, workers are more productive, health costs are reduced, and families and businesses can thrive. Maine’s future prosperity depends on our ability to drastically reduce preventable diseases and the stranglehold of health costs that accompany them.
Protect Maine Children from Toxic BPA
Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most pervasive chemicals in modern life. It is the building block for polycarbonate plastic and has been widely used in baby bottles, water bottles, food storage containers and in the lining of metal food cans, including some infant formula cans. BPA is unstable and can leach out of the plastic or can lining, entering the food and ultimately people. Because it disrupts hormones, BPA can harm the developing fetus, baby or child. BPA can cause learning disabilities, behavior problems, breast and prostate cancer, reproductive damage, early puberty in girls, diabetes, obesity and other health problems. There are safer alternatives to BPA for most uses. Major retail chains, baby bottle makers, and infant formula makers have taken action to eliminate BPA in children’s products.
