Mainers spend nearly $15 million on oil every single day – the vast majority of which we ship out of state and overseas. Oil is used for transportation (54 percent) more than for anything else, followed by the oil to heat homes (22 percent). Maine’s oil use is the state’s #1 source of air pollution, and high levels of air pollution contribute to serious health problems and the haze that can ruin scenic vistas at Acadia National Park and other treasured places. The key solutions are to use less energy and shift to clean, renewable energy for both heating and transportation.
