Our Future

Maine is at a crossroads – politically, economically, and environmentally.

This report, Investing In Maine's Environment: A Trail Map to Prosperity 2010-2015, is intended to offer a pathway – a trail map over the next five years – for protecting the good health, good jobs, and quality of life that Maine’s environment provides to all of us. It outlines specific steps that Maine policymakers must take to position Maine to lead and benefit from a quickly-changing world, while maintaining our solid roots in the beautiful environment we call home.

Welcome Message from Maureen Drouin, Executive Director, Maine Conservation Voters Education Fund

Maine's beautiful environment is the foundation of our prosperity and our way of life. It's part of our history and part of our future. It's the basis for how we work, how we relax, and how we sustain ourselves and our families.

Whether it's responding to emerging concerns or taking advantage of new science and technology opportunities, we need to maintain our forward-thinking approach to natural resource stewardship. We are counting on Maine policymakers to take the important steps needed to make use of Maine's extraordinary environment so Maine people and Maine's economy can thrive.

Maine's Environmental Priorities Coalition includes 25 environmental, conservation, and public health organizations who have joined together around a Common Environmental Agenda. We represent over 100,000 members in Maine who want to protect the good health, good jobs, and quality of life that our environment provides for all of us.

Health:
As a result of mercury bioaccumulation, pregnant and nursing women, women who may get pregnant, and children under age 8 should not eat any freshwater fish from Maine's inland waters. Except, for brook trout and landlocked salmon, 1 meal per month is safe. All other adults and children older than 8 CAN EAT 2 freshwater fish meals per month. For brook trout and landlocked salmon, the limit is 1 meal per week. Safe Eating Guidelines.
