Protect Maine Families Learning problems, autism, breast cancer, asthma — these and other health problems are all on the rise. Scientists have linked exposure to toxic chemicals to 180 different diseases and conditions. Toxins in the environment are among the causes of these critical health problems that can be prevented!
Currently, the system to prevent exposure to dangerous chemicals is broken. Recent testing shows that hundreds of hazardous chemicals used in common consumer products are found in people’s bodies, even in newborn babies. No laws currently require the use of safer alternatives or full safety testing for the vast majority of chemicals used in consumer products.
In the absence of effective federal laws, states like Maine are stepping up to ensure that hazardous chemicals in everyday consumer products are replaced with safer substitutes whenever available and affordable.
The Education Fund is a proud member of the Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine. For more information about protecting the health of your family from unnecessary toxic chemicals, visit the Alliance's website.
The Maine Conservation Voters Education Fund has just released Investing in Maine’s Future: A Roadmap for Environmental Health. Produced in collaboration with 21 other organizations, the publication outlines the major issues facing Maine’s natural resources, describes the progress made to date in addressing them, and suggests further action to be taken.
